Balearia Launches Fast Ferry Margarita Salas: Innovation and Sustainability at Sea
Balearia, a leader in sustainable maritime transport, takes a new step forward with the launch of its second gas-powered fast ferry, the Margarita Salas. Built at the Armon Shipyard in Gijón, this innovative vessel stands out for its advanced technology, environmental commitment, and improved comfort for passengers.
Technological Innovation and Efficiency
The Margarita Salas is an evolution of the pioneering Eleanor Roosevelt, with 10% more power thanks to its four dual gas engines of 9,600 kW each. These engines allow the ferry to reach a cruising speed of 35 knots, offering a fast and efficient travel experience (VesselFinder). The vessel also features azimuth thrusters and a stabilization system to improve maneuverability and onboard comfort by reducing vibrations and noise (GNV Magazine).
Commitment to Sustainability
Aligned with Balearia’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint, the Margarita Salas is the company's eleventh vessel equipped with dual gas engines capable of using renewable energy in the future. This approach enabled its twin, the Eleanor Roosevelt, to reduce over 11,000 tons of CO2 in one year (VesselFinder) (GNV Magazine). The use of aluminum construction reduces weight and fuel consumption, while also allowing for recycling at the end of its life (Offshore Energy).
Enhanced Passenger Experience
The new ferry was designed with passenger comfort in mind. With a second level offering more space and an expanded terrace with bar service, passengers will enjoy a more comfortable journey. Interior features include rest areas, a café, shop, children's play area, and free WhatsApp internet coverage throughout the trip (VesselFinder) (GNV Magazine).
Tribute to a Scientific Pioneer
The name Margarita Salas is not just a label—it honors the renowned molecular biology scientist. This dedication highlights Balearia’s commitment not only to technological innovation but also to celebrating outstanding figures in science and culture (VesselFinder).
